Workforce Development

The VMA is focused on workforce development issues as they relate to building a pipeline of skilled workers for manufacturing and other advanced technology industries in Virginia for the entire continuum from career exploration to employment.  This focus has led to the development of many workforce development resources as described below along with the development of partnerships with key allies focused on the same goal.  For more information on any of the VMA’s workforce development efforts, including how to access customized World Class Manufacturing training, please contact Dr. Victor Gray, VMA’s Director of Workforce Solutions, at 804-643-7489 ext. 120 or vgray@vamanufacturers.com.

  • Manufacturing Skills Institute
The Virginia Manufacturers Association (VMA) created the Manufacturing Skills Institute© (MSI) to increase accessibility to advanced technology industry training and credentials.  The MSI provides relevant education and skills training for careers in advanced manufacturing by offering world-class training programs delivered by MSI and MSI education partner institutions.  Through the partnership between industry and education, employers set the skill standards for MSI program offerings anywhere offered to ensure learning is linked to employment and career advancement opportunities.  Employer-specific customized training can be provided onsite or at any MSI education partner location.  Working learners advance their manufacturing technology knowledge and skills via OJT classes, classroom-based and online training offered by MSI and education partner faculty grounded in real word experience.

  • Military2Manufacturing
One of many obstacles faced by transitioning service members is a gap between their military experience and the necessary credentials to continue their career in the private sector.  Military2Manufacturing© (M2M) helps to reduce those barriers by charting a clear path to obtain competency-based, industry recognized and stackable credentials.  M2M offers state-of-the-art career preparation and assessment to help transitioning military start a private sector career in manufacturing resulting in transferable skills that can move with military personnel and their families.  The M2M career pathway helps recently separated veterans to “translate” past military experience and training into skills that lead to careers in advanced technology industries.
